Choosing where to train is one of the biggest decisions on the path to a barber career. Before you sign up anywhere, it helps to see what a real training floor looks and feels like — and to know what separates a program that will actually prepare you from one that won't.

What to look for in a barber school
A good barber school does three things: it's state-licensed and meets the 500-hour requirement, it gives you real hands-on practice on live clients (not just mannequins), and it prepares you specifically for the New York State board exam. Use the checklist below when you visit — in person or through video — so you can compare programs on what actually matters.
Is the school state-licensed?
Only training at a school licensed by the New York State Department of Education counts toward your 500 hours and qualifies you to sit for the state board exam. Confirm this first — everything else is secondary.
Will I practice on real people?
Ask how soon and how often you'll work on live clients under supervision. Barbering is a hands-on trade; the more supervised real-world practice, the more exam-ready and hireable you'll be. See the skills you'll practice.
Does the schedule fit my life?

Whether you tour a school on video or walk the floor in person, come with questions. The answers tell you far more than a glossy brochure ever will.
